The health benefits of swimming
Swimming is such a wonderful form of exercise for older adults, proclaims Kelley Hamilton of Bonaventure. Swimming provides exercise that has low impact on aging joints, muscles and bones. Because there is little impact on the body, seniors are able to exercise through swimming for much longer than they could by walking, jogging or Zumba, explains Kelley Hamilton, Bonaventure CEO. Swimming comes with a low risk of injury, as opposed to running, where knees, joint and feet can get jarred, advises Kelley Hamilton of Bonaventure. Additionally, if a person has suffered an injury, the pool is the perfect place to rehabilitate.
Swimming offers a total workout as well, explains Kelley Hamilton, Bonaventure CEO. Few other forms of exercise provide a full body workout that simultaneously improves muscle strength and cardiovascularhealth. According to Kelley Hamilton of Bonaventure, by incorporating diverse strokes and various pool exercises, all major muscle groups are engaged. Swimming also forces the body to regulate breathing. By breathing in a regulated, rhythmic manner, such as during freestyle strokes, the body becomes more relaxed, explains Kelley Hamilton of Bonaventure.
Swimming can reduce heart attack risk
One of the most striking benefits of swimming is its ability to help reduce the risk of heart attacks, confirms Kelley Hamilton, Bonaventure CEO. Regular swimming forces the body to use oxygen more efficiently and improves the flow of blood to heart and lungs. By swimming on a regular basis, continues Kelley Hamilton of Bonaventure, the pathways to and from the heart are less likely to become slowed or compacted, which can lead to heart disease and heart attacks. In some cases, swimming is also helpful for recovering from a heart attack. Working the heart and cardiovascular system provides huge benefits, notes Kelley Hamilton of Bonaventure.
How to take the plunge
Starting any new exercise can seem intimidating, affirms Kelley Hamilton, Bonaventure CEO. Before someone starts swimming he or she should talk to a doctor first. Then, one should start slowly by swimming even 12-20 minutes each time and then working up to longer swims. If boredom becomes a factor, Kelley Hamilton, Bonaventure CEO, recommends swimming different strokes or using paddleboards or flippers. If lap swimming isn’t interesting, Kelley Hamilton of Bonaventure suggests trying water aerobics, treading water, or simply running and walking in the water as alternatives. Group water aerobics offer a fun way to meet new people while getting a workout as well. The natural resistance water provides, says Kelley Hamilton, Bonaventure CEO, can be beneficial while repeating any physical movements in the pool.
